BackYard Hopping

4:50 p.m.

Hurrying through the hospital parking garage in search of my Vespa, I began to call Morag, but she beat me to it.

“Are you okay?” I blurted.

“I’m fine, Norbie. You’re out of breath. What the hell’s going on?”

“Mutti has stage III cancer, and it’s spread to her pelvis.” Somehow I’d managed to force the words past the hot lump in my throat.

She gasped. “Oh, poor Anna. I’m so sorry, babe. Poor Karl.”

“Doctor says she might get five years, so that’s something, right?”

“Yes, of course, definitely—”

She was cut off by shouts.

“What’s going on?” I said, my stomach cinching.

I jumped on the scooter and cranked it to life, zipping south along Mountain Brow Boulevard, phone glued to my ear.

“It’s okay, babe. It’s the Dads. They’re arguing again. This time it’s over the dinner menu.”

“That’s what they’re arguing over?”

Below, in the lower city, dark clouds pressed against the Hamilton Bay and its ring of steel factories. The stink of industry pricked my nostrils.

“Plus, these doddering old fools all ‘know a guy’ and have ordered in their own artillery. It’s like a freakin’ munitions depot in here. If this stuff goes off, we’ll be blown to kingdom come. Trust me, The Screw’s the least of our problems. The sooner you get back here, the better. Hey, I can’t hear myself!” she shouted at the Dads. “Shut it for one minute, would ya!” I could tell they’d only half-listened to her. They’d simply lowered their voices as they argued.

“Other than the arguing, are you okay? Do you have food to eat?”

“Are you kidding? I’ve never eaten so well. Mrs. Pappas is quite the cook.”

“Where did she get the food—?”

“Never mind, Norbie, just get us the frig out of here!”

Shouting male voices drowned her out. There was a shriek and the clanging of metal. Morag hung up.

I knew I had to get to the Tartan Club and save the day. Just add it to the dang list! The something made me glance over my shoulder. There was a black car gaining on me.

The Screw’s face grinned at me over the steering wheel. Holy steamroller! I cranked the throttle of my Vespa. It got louder, but not faster. For the first time ever, it occurred to my that my beautiful orange Vespa was not the coolest vehicle on the planet. In fact, maybe it was a teensy bit impractical. Maybe a massive, manly Harley would be a better choice for a moment like this. Just as I swung the curve edging Mountain View Park and booted south towards Concession Street, a spray of bullets dinged my gas tank. Startled, I lost control and the bike wobbled. Gas spumed out of the tank, soaking my pants. My heart was jackhammering in my chest. The Screw’s bumper was now just inches from my rear wheel.

Sure I was about to croak, I hopped the curb and zigzagged along the park grass, hoping he wouldn’t have the nerve to follow me.

Wrong!

The car’s engine roared as he shot the curb and raced after me.
